The Art of Coffee Roasting: A Journey from Bean to Brew

At Terran Coffee we don’t roast our coffee in-house. We’re not quite at that level yet. Instead, we set out trying different coffee until we found those magic beans we could stand behind. We found those beans from two roasters, one in Temecula California on the west coast and Orland Park, IL on the east.

These roasters have perfected the craft and understand the art of roasting coffee. In the future, Terran Coffee is looking to expand and become our own roaster, but for now, we are proud to offer some of the most amazing coffee out there. Let’s take a look at what goes into roasting amazing coffee beans like the ones offered at Terran Coffee.

The Green Canvas

Coffee, a beverage revered by many, begins its journey as a green seed hidden within the cherry of the coffee plant. The transformation of these seeds into the aromatic beans that fill our cups with a rich and complex elixir is an art form known as coffee roasting. This process is not just a step in coffee production; it’s a craft that shapes the very soul of your morning brew.

Roasting coffee is like painting on a green canvas, where the green coffee beans are the untouched medium. These beans are raw, dense, and packed with potential. They hold within them a spectrum of flavors and aromas that can only be unlocked through the application of heat.

The Roaster’s Palette

The roaster’s palette is a controlled environment where heat is applied to the beans. It’s a dance of temperature and time, carefully choreographed to coax out the beans’ best qualities. The roaster must consider the origin, variety, and moisture content of the beans, as each factor influences the roasting profile.

As the beans absorb heat, they undergo a remarkable transformation. They change color from green to yellow, then to shades of brown. The first significant milestone in the roasting process is the ‘first crack.’ This is a physical reaction where the beans expand and crackle, akin to popcorn popping. It signifies the onset of a light roast, where bright and acidic flavors shine.

After the first crack, the roaster enters the development phase. This is where the magic happens. The roaster must decide how much longer to roast based on the desired flavor profile. A shorter development time preserves the bean’s inherent characteristics, while a longer one enhances the roast’s influence, bringing forth bolder, more caramelized flavors.

Second Crack and Beyond: The Deepening

For those who favor a darker roast, the journey continues to the ‘second crack.’ This is where oils start to surface, and the beans take on a shiny appearance. The flavors become richer, more chocolatey, and robust. However, venturing too far into this territory can overshadow the bean’s unique traits, so the roaster must tread carefully.

Once the desired roast level is achieved, the beans are quickly cooled to stop the roasting process. This is a critical step, as the beans continue to cook from residual heat. Proper cooling locks in the flavors and sets the stage for the final act - grinding and brewing.

The result of this meticulous process is a bean that, when ground and brewed, offers a cup of coffee that is more than just a drink. It’s a daily ritual, a moment of pleasure, and a testament to the roaster’s skill. Each sip carries the story of the bean’s journey, from a humble seed to a beverage that awakens the senses and warms the soul.
